NEW MEMBER BENEFIT! AN ADDITIONAL JOURNAL FOCUSING ON ENVIRONMENTAL EPIDEMIOLOGY

Wolters Kluwer, in partnership with the ISEE, announces the launch of a new open access journal, Environmental Epidemiology! The journal is a companion to Epidemiology and both Epidemiology and Environmental Epidemiology will be the Society's official journals.

The new journal is an online only, open access journal aiming to provide a global forum for environmental epidemiology research. The inaugural Editor-in-Chief is Bert Brunekreef, PhD, Professor of Environmental Epidemiology at Utrecht University, The Netherlands and past president of ISEE. The journal is now open for peer review of manuscripts. Manuscripts may be submitted online.

ISEE PRESIDENT DISCUSSES THE FUTURE OF ENVIRONMENTAL EPIDEMIOLOGY WITH THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION

In April 2017 WHO-Europe held a workshop to set criteria for priorities in Environmental Health research aiming to develop a research agenda in coming years in Europe. Manolis Kogevinas was invited to participate and present the Society’s views.

He proposed four criteria to be used for developing priorities in research: (i) Novelty: Will research in a specific area produce new knowledge? (ii) Importance to People: Will the life and wellbeing of many populations be positively affected? Are there many people exposed? (iii) Impact on Policy: Will research in a specific area produce knowledge that meaningfully informs evidence-based health policies and prevention? (iv) Technical Innovation and development: Will research produce new technologies and help economic development?

A commentary summarizing his presentation will appear in the first issue of the new journal Environmental Epidemiology.

ISEE’S RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT TRUMP’S WITHDRAWAL FROM THE PARIS AGREEMENT

Dr. Manolis Kogevinas, ISEE President, and Dr. Beate Ritz, ISEE President-Elect, penned a response to President Trump's announcement of his intention to withdraw the US from the Paris Agreement. You can read the whole statement here.

The ISEE statement emphasizes that climate change is an important threat to humanity and the environment. President Trump's decision to withdraw the US from the historic Paris Agreement poses a major setback to global efforts to mitigate climate change.

The ISEE leadership calls on members to multiply their research and translation activities with regards to climate change and health.

THE ALTERNATIVE WORLD WATER FORUM (FAMA)

The Alternative World Water Forum (FAMA) will take place in Brasilia, Brazil, on March 17-19, 2018. This Forum is an international event that aims to gather researchers, organizations, and representatives of social movements that struggle for the defense of water as a fundamental right of life. Some of the topics that will be discussed in FAMA include the democratic access to water, struggle against the privatization of reservoirs and other water sources, water sanitation, public policies to socially control the water use and the protection of the environment.

The ISEE Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC) Chapter is actively involved in the organization of the Forum and would like to extent the invitation to FAMA to all other ISEE members. For more details, visit: http://www.fama2018.org/portal/fama-2018-1/fama-2018/

ISEE-SPONSORED COMMENTARY IN EPIDEMILOGY

Each year, ISEE sponsors timely and thoughtful commentaries which are published in EPIDEMIOLOGY. Recent commentaries from our members have discussed why more research on environmental pollution might not be needed, new frontiers for environmental epidemiology in a changing world, the epidemiological silver lining of climate change, the prevention of developmental neurotoxicity, and Science, Politics, and Health at the US EPA.  Keep an eye out for more member commentaries in upcoming issues of EPIDEMIOLOGY. And if you have an idea for a commentary you would like to read or write, please contact Greg Wellenius at gregory_wellenius@brown.edu.
